aka MINIATURE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS
During the 1960's, a California woman acquired a few small working (rodeo) Australian Shepherds. Pleased with their size and encouraged by her dogs' veterinarian, she began a breeding program based heavily on selective breeding for small size. This soon resulted in dogs which range in height from 13 to 18 inches tall and weigh between 15 and 30 pounds when matured. At that time they were commonly called Miniature Australian Shepherds and were still primarily registered as Australian Shepherds with the National Stock Dog Registry (NSDR). In 1993 they officially became known as North American Shepherds due to the effort of a growing group of enthusiast want to distinguish it as a separate breed. The North American Shepherd is recognized as a breed by the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA).
North American Shepherds are are also one of the best family/companion dogs available today. They are calm and confident and are entirely devoted to their masters. They will go to great lengths to please their masters. Their unique size makes them perfectly suited to city life as well as making them the perfect traveling companion. Our dogs have the advantage of both a city and rural life style. There is nothing they enjoy more than spending a day at our farm, playing and swimming in the pond, as obvious in some of the pictures on the following pages. No matter where you live, one of our puppies or dogs will fit your life style.
Buddy is a recently retired sire of Blue Okie Kennels. My daughter, Dani, and her family fell in love with him and he is now their family companion. He is unusual among dogs in that he is actively involved in the nurturing of his puppies. From the time the puppies were born, he has actively shared the responsibility of taking care of them with the dam. He spends his time watching over the puppies, bathing them, playing with them and teaching them puppy skills. It is amazing to watch. Dani made up a cute little story for her twin boys using pictures of Buddy and his puppies. Pay a visit to Dani's Home page to see the story, A Day in the life of Buddy. It's well worth the trip.
