The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (swissy) is the largest of the four Swiss Sennenhund breeds and is considered the oldest of the Swiss breeds.

Romus & Remus

Traditionally, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was bred as a work dog. Farmers and herdsmen used them in their daily chores for such tasks as pulling carts and keeping a watchful eye over livestock. Today the Swissy (as it is commonly known) is primarily a companion dog. It is noted for its gentle nature, great loyalty, and wonderful disposition toward children.

Swissy were first imported to the U.S in 1968 and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc. was formed in 1971 to promote the sound breeding, welfare, and wider recognition of the breed. Through careful selection of imports and breeding, the breed has shown steady growth.

In 1985, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was admitted to the Miscellaneous Class of the AKC. In 1992 the Greater Swiss Mountain Club of America started working towards full AKC recognition and in July of 1995, the Greater Swiss Mountain dog was granted full recognition in the Working Group.
